Alan has over 21 years’ experience in heavy industry, specialising in offshore and international oil and gas exploration and production operations, project leadership, and the development of HSE management systems.
He spent the first nine years of his career in a variety of project engineering, quality assurance and operations roles in the power generation and automotive industries, before moving into the oil and gas sector in 2003, when he joined Talisman Energy.
He spent two years as an Offshore Team Leader, responsible for the operations and maintenance functions on the Tartan Alpha platform in the North Sea, followed by an onshore subsurface project management role.
In 2007, he moved back into an operational leadership role managing several of Talisman’s UK offshore assets, before later assuming the role of Vice President – Central Business Area, where he managed five offshore assets, 15 oil fields, a combined onshore/offshore team of 600 people, and had oversight of three major development projects.
During his 12 year career with Talisman, Alan also gained extensive international experience, working in South America as Vice President & General Manager of Talisman’s operations in Peru, and in the company’s headquarters in Calgary where he was Vice President HSE for Talisman's North American Operations and the Global HSE support function.
Most recently, he was Asset Manager for Talisman’s Greater Fulmar Area in the North Sea, with overall accountability for delivering safe and efficient operations, and for maximising value from the mature asset in order to ensure continuing operational and commercial success.
Alan is a graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University and holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
